A/Prof Paul Gilmore qualified as a doctor in 1996 from Leeds University, UK. Following early surgical training, he embarked on a two-year Doctoral research program in 2001 with Cancer Research UK and the Christie Hospital in Manchester. Focused on the cellular basis of prostate cancer, this research secured over $100,000 in grants from the British Urological Foundation and The Royal College of Surgeons of England. His findings were widely published and led to a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree awarded by Manchester University.

He subsequently completed Specialist Training in Urology in the North West of England, covering all aspects of urological diseases and surgery across North Wales, Cheshire, and Merseyside. In 2010, A/Prof Gilmore relocated to Melbourne to advance his expertise in robotic cancer surgery through a 12-month Fellowship with Professor Tony Costello, Professor Declan Murphy, Dr Justin Peters, and A/Prof Daniel Moon.

Currently, he remains highly active academically and clinically as Head of Urology at Peninsula University Hospital. In this role, he teaches medical students from Monash University and supervises interns, junior doctors, and senior registrars. Additionally, he contributes to The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) by writing exams, having recently served as Chair of the Urology Speciality Specific Exams and Deputy Chair of the Physiology General Surgical Sciences Exam Committee.

Continuing his commitment to research, A/Prof Gilmore works with Bayside Health and has acquired nearly $200,000 in funding from The Lions and Rotary Clubs of Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula to aid in prostate cancer treatment. This strong background in leadership, research, and education led to his appointment as Adjunct Associate Professor in Surgery with the Alfred Hospital, School of Translational Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Monash University.
